Seeing the Invisible: Family Constellations

A method that sheds light on hidden dynamics within the family, the soul, and past lives.

What Are Family Constellations?

Family Constellations are a method of personal growth and healing that offers insight into invisible patterns, loyalties, and entanglements within a family or personal system. They help us understand how our relationships with family members — both living and deceased — unconsciously shape us. The method is based on the idea that there is a “family field” that remembers everything that has happened within the system — including trauma, exclusion, and unresolved destinies. Through constellation work, these dynamics are brought to light, creating space for deeper understanding, acceptance, and change.

What Is It Used For?

Family Constellations can be useful when we feel that a certain pattern in our lives keeps bringing us back to the same place, while conventional psychotherapy does not bring the desired shift. These may include complicated relationships with parents, partners, or children, feelings of not belonging, a sense of heaviness in life, unexplained symptoms, addiction, or depression.

The method can also be useful when we want to explore more deeply the relationships between our inner parts — for example, the inner child, the saboteur, or the adult version of ourselves — and to see how these forces interact.

Through a constellation, we can explore how our unconscious mind guides our lives, what we may be unconsciously loyal to, and why we do not allow ourselves success, health, or love.

Constellations also open the possibility of exploring inherited patterns, as well as themes that extend beyond this lifetime — past incarnations, transmitted trauma, and deep spiritual connections. They help us sense where there is a blockage within the system, but also how to restore the flow of love, life, and energy.

Origins and Development

The Family Constellations method was developed by German therapist Bert Hellinger in the second half of the 20th century. He combined knowledge from psychoanalysis and Gestalt therapy with his own insights gained through his experiences working with African communities. Through this work, he recognized the importance of ancestral connections and loyalties that extend beyond personal will.

Since then, the method has evolved and expanded. Today, there are different schools and approaches — from classical Family Constellations, through systemic constellations, to spiritually oriented approaches that include work with archetypes, the soul, and past lives. They all share a common foundation: respect for the system to which we belong and the discovery of hidden influences that shape our lives.

How Does It Differ from Other Therapies?

Family Constellations work on the level of the system and the soul, unlike individual therapy, which often focuses on personal psychological dynamics. Instead of analysing a single problem, constellations allow us to see how that problem may be a reflection of a larger whole — often a family legacy that we carry unconsciously.

Another important difference lies in the way the work is conducted. Constellations do not rely solely on story and verbal analysis, but also involve space, the body, intuition, and energetic work.

By placing representatives for family members, inner parts, or concepts (such as love, illness, or guilt), the system begins to “show itself” in the space. This often brings powerful insights, emotions, and shifts on a deeper level, without the need for many words.

In addition, constellations are a method that deeply respects silence, symbolism, and the movement of the soul. Many people experience them as a ritual, a contact with something greater — whether we call it collective consciousness, the soul of the family, or divine intelligence. It is precisely this breadth and openness to spiritual dimensions that makes this method unique.

What Can You Expect in a Constellation Session?

The work can take place individually or in a group. In group work, participants choose representatives for members of their family, parts of themselves, or other elements. These representatives spontaneously begin to experience emotions, tensions, and impulses that correspond to the actual people they represent, thereby revealing relationships and dynamics within the system.

In individual work, a different approach is used — such as figures, pieces of paper, cushions, or the therapist’s intuitive work. Regardless of the format, the process can bring greater clarity, emotional release, relief, and often a shift that can be felt in everyday life.

It is not necessary to know all the details of your family history — the “field” knows, and often reveals things we were not aware of. What matters is to come with openness and a willingness to look at and accept what has long been suppressed or excluded.

If you feel that it is time to see your life from a broader perspective, Family Constellations may be the right place to begin. Sign up for an individual session or join a workshop. Let us explore together what lies beneath the surface — and what is ready to be released.
